This kitchen towel is a local take on the iconic, blue-and-white, Japanese wood-block print ’The Great Wave off Kanagawa’, by the 19th Century artist Hokusai. Cape Town has always been called the ‘Cape of Storms’ for good reason and many a poor soul met their end during a storm in Table Bay. This cloth is an extension of my interest in the 15th century legend that scores of Chinese sailors found their way to the Cape under the command of Zheng He. This is a theme I have explored in my work under the banner of ‘Afrochine’ – the marriage of Africa and China in decorative arts.
