Afrikaans is the world’s youngest official language and one that is said to have originated from the 17th, 18th and 19th century kitchens of the Cape. In light of this, I want to celebrate some of the many wonderful idioms that are found in Afrikaans and that relate to the kitchen. ‘Elke pot hey sy deksel’ translates to ‘Every Pot has their Lid’, basically: every person has their special person who will fit into them and their lives perfectly. These make great wedding or anniversary gifts – or simply as a reminder to the single that their ‘Lid’ is out there waiting for their ‘Pot’.
