To celebrate Valentine’s Day this year, Elise Wessels has blessed us with a series of painted ceramic dishes featuring different plants that each have their own symbolic meaning. In times of past, it was common for lovers and admirers to send each other flowers as a way to communicate their true feelings.

Wessels has chosen the Rock Rose, Forget-Me-Not, Anemone and Nasturtium for this body of work; the meanings of which can be found below.

Rock Rose – Finding safety in love.

Forget me not – The very name is love’s own poetry. Born of the heart, and of the eye begot. Nursed amid sighs and smiles of constancy… and ever breathing, Love – Forget me not!

Anemone – A fleeting love. These flowers are said to sprung from the blood of Adonis, beloved of Aphrodite as he died in her arms.

Nasturtium – An impetuous love that simply cannot wait. This fast paced flower will grow anywhere and everywhere, and do not think for a moment about tomorrow.
