Born in Durban, Kwazulu Natal in 1988, Erin Chaplin is self-taught and appears intimately self aware. Her painterly still lifes and portraits offer something intricate and private in each loose, brushstroke. Working in oil, her works are alive with spectacular texture, each holding a strange ability to both jar and soothe the viewer. “I am trying to set less rules for myself. Trying to focus on the present and let the outcome be secondary,” says Chaplin. This surrender feels present in Chaplin’s capacity to convey lyrical movement within the inanimate. She has had two solo exhibitions at Chandler House’s Voorkamer Gallery, Outgrowth in 2017 and Nice for What in 2018. Chaplin participated in Everard Read Cape Town’s Cubicle Series, August, 2019. Chaplin currently lives and works in Cape Town.
