The Dassie, Rock Hyrax or – Procavia capensis as they are called in the scientific world – are native to Cape Town and live in our beautiful mountains. They are also meant to be the closest living relative to the Elephant (Hmmmm… really?) I would love one as a pet, but sadly this isn’t an option. So the next best way to live with one is by having a wooden version on your bookshelf. Each Dassie is hand-carved by the talented Lameck Tayengwa and is therefore unique in size and appearance.
