The Full Moon Dinner Plate

The Chandler House ‘Full Moon’ plate is made from the artwork of a hard-ground etching that Michael did in 2016 at a print-making course. Created in the traditional manner on a highly-polished brass plate, thousands of hatch-marks are used to create the dark lunar patches on the moon known as ‘mare’. These dark patches were originally thought to contain water, and so they have ended up being called seas, lakes, marshes and bays. Some of the more romantic names include the ‘Sea of Showers’, the ‘Ocean of Storms’, the ‘Sea that became Known’ and the ‘Sea of Tranquility’.

“This plate is part of a larger, personal project aimed at reminding myself to be more conscious of our ever shifting cosmic neighbour. When it the Moon is full, I try to remember to set my dinner table with our Full Moon Table Cloth, and when I am invited to a wedding or birthday, I include one of our Moon Phase postcards, reflecting the phase of the moon on that specific day. These are all small acts of reclaiming mystery, and our lost relationship with Cosmos in our hectic, digital lives.”
