Karoo Winter

An 'En Plein Air' Exhibition by Jenny Parsons

In July of this year, Jenny Parson spent ten days painting at Aswater, a working farm in the Klein Karoo. Here she shared a studio with a group of fellow artists who are equally dedicated to the practice of making and painting. Together, they would set out into the early chill of the winter morning to capture the sunrise with their brushes and paint. The camaraderie of working in challenging conditions with other artists was a highlight; each supporting and learning from one another.

Artist Statement:

“In my paintings of the farm, I responded to the contrasts of the early morning and evening light created by the low winter sun. I was also enchanted by the cultivated lands which described the contours of the valley in which the farm lies. And of course the colours of the winter landscape with its bare poplar trees and bright green fields adjacent to the sludgy colours of the Karoo veld and mountains. This was a new landscape to me, and I relished the total immersion in the landscape over the ten day retreat.”
