Kloof Corner, Five Studies and a Painting

As Spring moves into Summer, we can all be thankful for the warmer days, greener gardens and a little bit of extra day light in every passing day. Artists are acutely aware of light, and how it changes throughout the day – and the seasons. In this small collection of work, Jacques Viljoen has painted several studies for a larger painting of Kloof Corner; all of which are presented in this exhibition. I spoke to Jacques about these works and he had the following to share with me:

“After I had painted the sunset on Kloof Corner, I realised that it wasn’t just one moment, but many different moments. I wanted to make a large painting of that but the challenge was having to to figure out which one of those moments I wanted to paint. As the sun moves in the sky, the light really differs from minute to minute, exponentially even; so the only way to capture the subject that was to paint many studies from life. I did many quick ones as fast as possible, as accurately as possible, and then I used them to help me make the larger one, as it required many sessions. Essentially, I spent many hours creating a painting that was about a fleeting moment.
