Leo Season, Eclipse Edition

I was very excited about creating a new collection of my golden Sun Masks for Leo Season this year: July 23rd – August 23rd. I have had a lot of interest in them, and a long waiting list has built up over the years.

For those unfamiliar with this annual tradition of mine, every year while the Sun is in the sign of Leo, I make a series of sun ceramics. According to the astrological tradition, the Sun rules the sign of Leo. When the Sun is in this sign, it is considered to be ‘in its dignity’—and is happiest here. I like to think that these ceramics capture the Sun’s ‘good vibes’ and radiate them throughout the rest of the year. They are also dazzling to look at. And as I only make a few of them, and at a very specific part of the year, they are limited, special, and rare.

Sadly, there won’t be any golden Suns this year. Each and every one of the nine I made has cracked. So much for good vibes, you may say…

But a very interesting astrological event occurred while I was making these—a total solar eclipse. These are rare, and as it happened, fell on the exact part of my chart that rules my creative output. My creativity was essentially… eclipsed. It couldn’t have been more literal, and it has brought me some comfort.

Next year, we will be on the lookout for eclipses before we start making them!

Luckily, we have thirty terracotta suns—one for each degree of the sign of the Zodiac—which were made before the eclipse. They are really lovely and make up the body of this exhibition.

And to sign off, I would like to dedicate this exhibition to Rod Suskin, who passed away quite recently. He taught me astrology for three years, and has had an enormous influence and impact on people all over the world. May his work still shine on through those who learnt so much from him.
